In classical Christian education, which Charlotte Mason so beautiful interpreted for us, we believe that giving children models for beauty will help to form their hearts to desire that which is beautiful. Its easy to think of this in terms of art and nature, but it also applies to reading and writing. In “The Wind in the Willows”, Kenneth Grahame’s writing style is whimsical and captivating. By reading aloud on the pod with expression and fluency, I hope to offer a model that children might one day imitate. Following along with the text will give students a visual for beautiful language and the way words and punctuation fit together. Engaging in this active form of reading can help form children into better readers and writers.

I’ll be reading aloud from this edition of The Wind in the Willows. The original story was ten chapters long, but this edition includes twelve with some extra material. The illustrations are absolutely stunning! Younger children can enjoy the pictures, while older readers might enjoy following along.

“Home! That was what they meant,

those caressing appeals,

Those soft touches wafted through the air,

those invisible little hands pulling and tugging,

all one way.”
